Rabi sowing has begun and initial reports show that the acreage in some of the key crops such as wheat, chana (gram) and mustard are currently lower than in the same period a year ago. The area under rabi pulses this year will likely be the same as last year with the trade projecting higher imports of yellow peas from Canada. Apple imports into the country may be at a record high this year because of the demand for quality fruits. Onion prices are ruling high at retail outlets as the Centre does not have control over retailers and the bulb’s exports have resumed after two months. Domestic gold prices are tumbling as the dollar is gaining strength.
